In the last couple of days I’ve felt a little more optimistic. It’s funny how one small dream can quickly lead to another. Making those dreams happen is the difficult part, but optimism certainly helps.

I’ve struggled to find things to be optimistic about just lately. My football team is an eternal disappointment; everyday life is a muddle and a struggle; and I wasn’t able to retrieve my iTunes downloads. However, all that changed today. Someone at iTunes let me download all my old purchases. Well, that is except for More Than A Feeling by Boston, sadly (and strangely). But I do have The Final Countdown by Europe back. I only buy cheese in download form, and I only download cheese! I must buy Lordi’s Hard Rock Hallelujah at some point…

Music makes it better again, somehow.

I just had the most amazing guitar session… on my own. My stepbrother’s band are about as active as half of England’s batsmen today… so I’m writing some music to my songs, and it’s going fairly well. I know my guitar as well as you do, and I have only guitar effect, namely "overdrive", so the results are spectacular if not completely useless. But I’m working on riffs and frameworks for "Sinner In Your Eyes" – and I’m going for a Dream Theater effect. And I’m getting to where I want to be, even though it will of course be nowhere near Dream Theater standard. Oh well…

I have a blog (in fact I have two) at WordPress.com, known simply as The Songs Of Geoff Brady. I’ve been writing songs for my stepbrother’s band (of which I have my doubts over its existence, largely down to a lack of a band name), but recently I’ve hit a bit of a writers’ block. The eighteen songs on there vary quite a lot in terms of quality, and perhaps the more I’ve written songs, the less originality is in them.

I would seek more inspiration from the type of music my stepbrother is interested in, but I don’t due to a combination of factors: fear, lack of interest and an unwillingness to either steal or pay over the odds to obtain such tracks are a few. I’ve thought about basing a song on a work of literature, but the same reasons for not doing so apply here too. So any inspiration is appreciated!

In a joint venture between NSR FM and The Gate, there is to be a competition called Busk Idol. There will be a competition to find four of those with musical talent to busk in The Gate, and keep the money they earn. The Gate will then match what has been earned and donate it to Tiny Lives in the Royal Victoria Infirmary.

I would be tempted to enter, but there are several things that stop me:

I will look like a right wally;

I don’t have a full-size acoustic guitar;

I have only one song in my set, and I haven’t completely finished it yet;

I would have to enter by recording myself on camera (which I don’t have);

I’m not convinced I can sing – and I suspect many will agree.

As such, I’ll pass on this one, and I will instead opt to finish the songs and try to record them.

Well yesterday was an interesting day. Had my first revision lectures. I don’t care what other people say, they are worth it. Even material that I have covered in my revision so far would not have helped me – past papers are much better to revise from.

I had a bit of an unsettling experience between lectures though. At one point, I thought, “What am I doing here?” – which isn’t a question that was welcome in my mind a week before my first exam. I just felt that I would be of better use elsewhere. I have a calling, I just can’t hear where it’s bloody coming from!

Anyway, made some time for some shopping. Having spent over £500 for the plane tickets to Tokyo the night before, you’d think I’d be saving every remaining penny on my person. Not so. I bought some paper and a pen (for revision, of course!) and I bought Dream Theater’s Images And Words for the princely sum of £3.97. Amazing! I also bought The Big Issue. It has gone up 10p since I last bought it (yes, as bad as the railways!) to £1.50.

I foolishly made the mistake of forgetting to do my Statistics homework, which is due in today. My second deadly error was to wait even more and start it during the Liverpool v Arsenal match in the Carling Cup. What a match! It ended Liverpool 3-6 Arsenal. I am quite pleased about this.

To finish, I have written another song. I’m not sure about it. The choruses were an afterthought and became the central theme, so I went back and edited other bits. I’m not sure it flows now. Anyway, if you want to see, it’s at my The Songs Of Geoff Brady site, and it is called Just Three Sins.

Football… we lost. But gallantly so. We played well, but Chelsea just managed that winner. So I’m not too disheartened. It seems young Paul Huntington had a decent enough debut – perhaps away to the Premiership champions isn’t the ideal debut, but needs must.

Cricket… Monty Panesar became the first Englishman to get a five-wicket haul at Waca today. Duncan Fletcher didn’t seem too pleased… Steve Harmison has also just picked up his fourth wicket of the day and Australia are all out, which is also good news.

Now, my news. I have finished all my assignments and my project, with a couple of days to spare. So I intend on enjoying the last two days of this semester! I’m not quite sure how, but it will probably involve some sort of food.

I have also written a new song on The Songs Of Geoff Brady.

Firstly, an apology. I have been really rather busy doing… nothing in particular. Building websites, helping people, and doing rather little that is useful to me – not least assignments for Uni. But I’m starting to get back to normal.

I’ve written a new song on geoffbrady.wordpress.com – this is less for me, and more for my stepbrother, who actually wants to put my lyrics forward to the band. And it seems his bassist is just as keen. I’m quite excited. But I’m not holding my breath. Quite often bands have the music in their heads before embarking on lyrics. But we shall see.

I’m considering upgrading my computer. However, if I am to upgrade to a dual core processor, likely spend is about £150. I’m not whether that is worth it. I would be getting a much faster computer, but anger and frustration is free! I could wait to see whether prices go down, but is that worth it either? Damn money…!

The title comes from Hi de Hi. Don’t know why I used it, just thought it funny at the time. But anyway – what you have all been waiting for: my daily news.

It doesn’t disappoint. I handed in my assignment for Number Theory and Cryptography – uncompleted. Everyone found it difficult, but we shall see how I do. It’s my bad really, I didn’t go to the tutorial. But to be fair, I did study the tutorial questions, and they would not have helped me.

I have also found a band to play my songs! Incredible. It’s my stepbrother’s band (don’t know who they’re called…), but if they like the songs, you never know! I could have a number one! (Yes, ok, I doubt it, but you never know!)I also went out tonight to celebrate Rosie’s 22nd birthday (Happy Birthday Rosie!). It was good! I had two Rosie-vodka-and-cokes (i.e. Rosie’s generous measures) and two JD-and-cokes (i.e. Mood’s measures, which actually seemed rather generous – although I was too busy watching the football to notice how much was actually put in). Anyway, got home safely, called Deano a gnome, so I think I better go to bed!
