Dear Jonathan Woodgate

I am writing this letter in case Mr. Woodgate is going to desperate lengths to choose between Newcastle United and Middlesbrough to spend a season’s loan.

If you were to come to Newcastle United, you will be very much welcome. Glenn Roeder (who, by the way, is a very nice man) has been looking for a decent centre half, and, to be frank, we only got excited as soon as you were mentioned. You are probably regarded as Newcastle United’s best centre half in the last ten years, and in fact, probably much further back than that.

I remember upon your leaving us for Real Madrid, you wanted Newcastle United to keep the Number 6 shirt vacant. Since then we had Jean-Alain Boumsong (which, in many quarters, was regarded as the same thing), and so if you return, I have little doubt you will be offered your Number 6 shirt.

And do you remember us, the Toon Army supporters? We have sore throats the morning after every match whatever the result is - home or away. We’d make playing a pleasure for you again! And last of all, if you are worried about playing regularly, then don’t. Rest assured that if you are fit, you’ll be playing every game.

I know you are probably very tempted to join your boyhood club, and I will understand if you do (it would be hypocritical of me otherwise - Shearer did the same), but we really really really really want you to play for us again. Please. I’ll buy a Woodgate-6 shirt…!

The only problem with Woodgate is that he only plays 10 or 11 games a season because he’s injured the whole time.

just shows how desperate the club is for a centre half! Anyway, it will be great if the guy can keep himself fit… but then knowing Newcastle’s luck chances are he is going to twist his ankle on a rock after 5 great performances. Will promptly be out for the rest of the season. But great club and I hope they have a good season.
